Kids....and the movies they leave us watching

Lizzie begged to watch Stars Wars: A New Hope or Episode IV for those who keep up with the numbers the other day. Only problem is that we do not own episodes IV, V and VI on DVD only on VHS tape. So, Chris being a good daddy and wanting to pass on his Star Wars geekiness to his children went online to our Netflix account. He put the movies at the top of our list and today the movie arrived in the mailbox. Liz was so excited and begged to watch it immediately. As soon as we got inside the house and dropped all of our gear, Chris put the DVD in the player. Lizzie climbed up on the love seat and started watching the movie. To our entertainment, on the opening credit screen with all the words that tell you what has happened in a galaxy far, far away, Lizzie began making up her own description!

It is really funny hearing how your four year old can create a new story about a princess in the stars. I cannot remember what she said but every time she watches this movie, the opening screen is always different. But my favorite saying from Lizzie watching Star Wars is "Momma, why are those storm troopers wearing their underwear on the outside of their clothes?" I have always thought that, too!

Oh well, she only watches the movie for a little while and then the adults are usually left folding laundry or doing other housework while it continues to play. We cannot turn it off because the Darth Vader in her will appear and demand to watch the movie. She says Princess Leia is her favorite but at times she really does favor the Dark Side. She does come back and watch the final battle scene so she can watch Princess Leia present Luke and Han Solo with a medal at the end.

I have had to pretend to receive lots medals because of this one scene. At times, I wish the medals were for cooking dinner or fighting off the monsters that sleep in the closet at night. If I had an x-wing fighter I could have earned a real Star Wars medal or I could pick up a few packages of cough drops and wear them on my shirt to pretend I work for the Empire. Either way, Star Wars has become one of Lizzie's favorite movies and that is a lot better than Dora, Barney or Nick Jr any day!

May the force be with you!-----Lizzie Hall
